    Common Wood Floor Installation Problems

Here a few common wood floor installation problems that can occur when the flooring is not installed properly by your local wood floor Contractor:

    CRACKS BETWEEN BOARDS

Cracks that occur between boards are normal for the interior of homes during heating season when the home becomes dry. Wood floors dry out and shrink slightly. It is expected that hardwood floors have “hairline cracks” between boards in dry months in most areas of North America. They will close up during non-heating months, when the moisture level in the floor changes.

    CUPPING OF WOOD FLOORS

Cupping of wood floors occurs when the floors are subjected to moisture only on one side, which will expand on that side and will warp by bending away from the moist side. If cupped boards are dried quickly enough, they usually return to a float position. However, if they remain cupped for too long, the stresses within the boards may change to the extent that drying will not remove the cupping. Some cupping is considered normal, as moisture levels in the home fluctuate, and is not usually noticeable.

    BUCKLED FLOORS

There is only one reason why floors will buckle (literally pulls away from the sub-floor, rising up to several inches in one or more places), and that is, the floors have been given a massive dose of moisture, usually beneath the floor. This is caused from poor under-floor ventilation, broken water pipes, or undesirable outside conditions to name a few. Once buckling has occurred, the floor will not return to its normal posture without being repaired.
    And did you know?

Check out these fun facts about wood flooring and its eco-friendly benefits:

Wood flooring is the most abundantly renewable flooring material available. Sustainable forest management makes it possible to harvest wood without any deleterious impact on the environment because trees are a renewable resource that can be replaced — or replanted! — time and time again.
